Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy
A specialist massage technique that stimulates lymph flow to reduce puffiness, accelerate recovery, and visibly de-puff the face and body.
A 45-minute private consultation precedes every booking. We assess suitability, map the face, and agree a written plan before any treatment is confirmed.
Most clients return to normal activity the same day. Any localised swelling or redness typically settles within 24–72 hours.
A review is offered at the clinically appropriate interval for each protocol, with photographs taken under standardised lighting to document progress.
What clients typically ask.
Answers below are summaries of widely accepted clinical practice. Your specific plan is always confirmed in consultation.
What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)?
MLD is a gentle, rhythmic, very light-touch manual technique originally developed by Dr Emil Vodder in the 1930s. It uses slow, directional strokes to encourage the movement of lymphatic fluid through superficial lymph vessels toward functioning lymph nodes, supporting the body's own filtration and immune processes.
What is it commonly used for?
In clinical settings MLD is an evidence-based adjunct for lymphoedema following lymph-node surgery or radiotherapy, and for reducing post-operative swelling after plastic and cosmetic procedures. In an aesthetic context it is used to reduce fluid retention, soften puffiness, and support recovery after injectables, liposuction, or rhinoplasty.
Does it hurt?
No. MLD uses very light pressure, often described as barely more than skin contact. Deep-tissue, sports, or Swedish massage techniques are clinically distinct from MLD and are not interchangeable with it.
Is there any downtime?
There is no downtime. You may need to urinate more frequently in the hours following treatment as fluid mobilises, and drinking water afterwards is sensible. Most people return to normal activities immediately.
Who should not have MLD?
MLD is not appropriate for people with untreated congestive heart failure, active deep vein thrombosis, acute infection or cellulitis in the treatment area, or active untreated malignancy. A full medical history is taken at consultation to screen for contraindications.
